Río Secreto is an underground river system located approximately 5 Kilometers (3 miles) southwest of Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo. The caves are easily accessible via Cancun-Tulum Highway 307 Km 282.

Most tours of Río Secreto include transportation from Cancun and the Riviera Maya, but you can also find it via public transportation, taxi or car. The entrance to Río Secreto is conveniently right next to the highway.

How do I get there from Cancun?

If you are visiting us from Cancun, go to the Cancun bus terminal (located on the corner of avenidas Tulum and Uxmal) and take one of the ADO first-class buses to Playa del Carmen. It will cost about $38 pesos.  You can also go to the parking lot of the Comercial Mexicana on Tulum Avenue and take one of the public transit vans to Playa del Carmen for about $30 pesos.  These buses and vans leave every 10 minutes.

How do I get there from Cozumel?

From Cozumel, you start by taking the ferry to Playa del Carmen.  There are two ferry lines offering services, and they leave every hour from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and then at 12:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m., etc.  A round trip ferry ride costs about $180 pesos.  Ferry schedules can vary according to the season and the ferry line, so we suggest you check departure times beforehand.

How do I get there from Playa del Carmen?

From Playa del Carmen, go to the bus station located only a few blocks from the dock at 5th Avenue and Juarez Avenue.  At the bus terminal, you can get to Río Secreto by taking the bus that goes towards Tulum.  Or you can take one of the public transit vans located between 15th and 20th streets. Tell the van driver to let you off at Km 282 at the entrance to Río Secreto, which is less than 2 Kilometers (1.2 miles) from Calica Port.  Taking the bus or van costs around $15 pesos.  Some of the buses leave every hour from 4:00 a.m.  Another option is to take a private taxi to Río Secreto, which will cost $15 US dollars for 4 persons, one way.

How long does it take to get there?

The amount of time it takes to get there depends on the type of transportation you use, traffic conditions and time of day, but approximate times are:

From Cancun to Playa del Carmen: 1 hour 20 min.
From Cozumel to Playa del Carmen: 50 min.
From Playa del Carmen to Río Secreto: 10 min.
From Tulum to Río Secreto: 1 hour.

"Fantastic"
We visited on March 16th, 2010 from a Royal Caribbean Excursion. FANTASTIC!. Our group of 5 consisted of 2 kids, 8&10, all the way to Grandma "Nene" (71). Mariana was our guide. I cannot recommend her highly enough. She is half the experience, really. Her gentle pace, messages and illustrations using cave water, rocks, shrimp, fish, bats & a crab all made lasting impressions. At first I was skeptical of not being able to bring a camera or flashlight, but I was so glad I did not. The helmut & light all played into the experience of shutting down, turning on and watching. Plus when I bring a camera guess who is never in the picture! Their photo DVD with Mariana's excellent added shots is well worth the price. Do this and save the beach for later. Great job guys!
